Welcome to Semantic Shenanigans!
Welcome! We are so glad you could join us.
We are unabashed fan girls and have been so ever since we were wee squeeing kids.
Thank you to Busy Little Beaver Productions for getting us started!
The Law is an Alien
We have noticed, over the years, that fandoms of all sorts are continuously colliding with the legal system. Cosplayers are bothered at conventions. Artists violation copyright, or see their own intellectual property infringed upon. Fan fiction writers wonder whether a disclaimer will save them. Songwriters hear one thing, write another, but are hauled into court anyway. YouTube issues take down notices. Conventions get ugly. Stars are arrested. Corporate IP holders merge. Or they engage in proxy shareholder fights or struggle to gain control of the board of directors.
Fandom, for your Grade
Fandoms are also the subject of scholarship. Because what fans do and write and dress up as can reflect any manner of personal idiosyncrasies. Fans demonstrate innermost urges with slash or Mary Sues. They engage in alpha nerding oneupmanship. Or maybe they just want to have some fun.
We look at how fandom crashes into both of these areas. In addition, we blog and podcast about how these encounters affect all of society. We do our best to break down the legalese. It can often sound just like an alien dialect. We go past the news articles and the rumors in order to bring you a fresher perspective on what is really going on. Also, we express our opinions on how we think it will affect the future of fandom, and of society at large. Since a music case can affect books. Because a cosplayer in Norway can inspire someone in New Zealand. Especially relevant, writing fan fiction can provide inspiration and guidance and practice for an aspiring author.
A Message to You. Yeah, You!
Along the way, we know we will learn a lot from you. And we hope to make friends. Because we have known each other for years, first as fellow fan fiction writers. We are eager to get to know you as well.
Welcome to our world.
